Albert LeaAlbert Lea, proclaimed on Aug. 31, 2011, has a long standing tradition of Veterans Organizations participating in community events. In order to become a Yellow Ribbon Community, a steering committee was formed in 2010 with key city officials, a representative from the National Guard and a leader from the Family Readiness Group. They received valuable advice while partnering with the commanding officer of the Delta Company and the chairman from the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Southeast Minnesota.
Albert Lea has set up a free Skype service at a local business for families of deployed soldiers, purchased Hug-a-Hero dolls and dog tags for the military children and hosted a Memorial Day deployment picnic and dance for the local Guard unit. They are currently building a Wall of Honor at the local mall featuring photos of deployed soldiers and their families.
