Tax Information

Before you get started on your taxes this year, check out what free services, credits and exclusions are available Servicemembers and military families.

Did you know:

  • IRS deadlines are automatically extended for qualifying Servicemembers
  • If you served in a combat zone as an enlisted person or warrant officer for any part of a month, all your military pay received for military service that month is not taxable
  • Your spouse can file your joint return if they have a power of attorney
  • You may be able to deduct some costs you incur while looking for a new job after a deployment. Expenses may include travel, resume preparation fees and outplacement agency fees
  • If military regulations prohibit you from wearing certain uniforms when off duty, you can deduct the cost and upkeep of those uniforms, but you must reduce your expenses by any allowance or reimbursement you receive
  • Members of the Minnesota National Guard and Reserve can also claim a subtraction of compensation that is included in federal taxable income for training and meetings whether they are held in Minnesota or outside the state (excluding AGR positions)
